Writing is for many authors a labor of love with little compensation. Writers can struggle for years to break into mass market, and when they do, one would think the years of toiling in obscurity for little or no money are over. Sadly, in the case of Dorchester/Leisure books, this isn’t the case.
We all know the economy is in poor shape. Many industries have been affected, and publishing is no exception. Kindle may make things lighter, but it has nearly destroyed the sale of print books. Still, if a publisher had a contract to pay writers for their books, they must do so. If they are contracted to pay royalites on a regulary scheduled basis, they must do so. Alas, this is not always the case. Numerous Dorchester authors have not been paid for their work since 2009. To add insult to injury, Dorchester continues to sell on Kindle books whose rights were returned to the authors who made such an agreement in lieu of money they gave up trying to recoup.
Imagine not paying your doctor for two years. Or going to the grocery store and taking food you never pay for. It wouldn’t happen. You would be prosecuted. Yet for some reason, writers are treated this way. Terradan Works may be small but we strive to be ethical. That doesn’t mean we don’t make mistakes, we do. But we do our best to acknowledge, apologize and correct them.
We ask that you join us, take a stand and boycott Leisure books. The next time you see someone reading a recent Leisure book by Brian Keene or JF Gonzalez, to name two, remember this writer HAS NEVER GOTTEN A DMIE FOR IT. Please check Brian Keene’s blog for updates on this situation. Thank you!
